Union Square, 1988, oil on linen, 72x120"

Roger Winter has turned a pitiless eyeon the blighted part of Union Square.  In a painting almost the size of a billboard, he gives an eloquent visual account of its tackiness.  A photo-realist, he starts out by making camera views of his subjects, but on the canvas strokes the paint in to suggest, rather than mimic, details.  Once Buckminster Fuller, the futurist engineer, said to him, “Your paintings reflect the end of an era,” and this view of Union Square would seem to bear that out.

Grace Glueck, 1992
